If you are in the Victoria area tonight, be sure to make it to the opening of Abracadabra, an art show and book launch. It features over 30 artists (including me), mostly from the area. The full colour book is really well put together, and centers around the theme of magic and metaphysics.

(I'll post photos from inside the book soon.)
Well, we had our opening reception for our show at Studio 16 1/2 on Saturday, and it went really well. It was sooo much work putting it all together, but we were really happy with how everything turned out. The owners of the gallery are really fantastic and great to work with too (Give them a hearty hello if you stop by!). Lots of people came by, sold quite a few pieces, sold some prints too, and met some really cool people. I thought it was quite interesting that a number of people I met had read this blog. When I post stuff here, I always imagine folks from far away are reading this, since most comments come from far flung places. I shouldn't be too surprised, I guess. It's fun to meet your blog visitors face to face, and get their comments and impressions in person.
I thought I'd share some pics (the gallery is in Fan Tan Alley, which is why there is a photo of an alley in this bunch. It's a pretty cool location, with lots of interesting shops along the alleyway)...
By the way, Kristen's got a brand spankin' new Flickr account, so you can see most of her paintings there. Check them out!
a collection of beasts, hovering and otherwise. (ink & watercolour on paper, mounted on board, 6 x 6 inches.)
I've been taking the bus to work 3 times a week, ever since my carpooling pal was downsized. The upside is that I can do some drawing on the bus. Strange things are appear in my sketchbook when I draw at 7 AM...
Here's another drawing for my upcoming show.
I'm doing a whole series that are 6 x 6 inches, ink & watercolour on paper, mounted on wood, for our upcoming show. Here's one of them (more to come):
I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to my wife, Kristen. Kristen, this is everybody.
Kristen and I are having an art show together in March, which we are madly preparing for, at Studio 16 1/2 in Fan Tan Alley, here in Victoria BC. Here's the invite I designed:
The opening reception is Saturday March 10th, from 1 to 4. Stop by and say hello!
So there's something you didn't know about me - my wife is an artist too. (so does that count as one of five things you didn't know about me, for which I've been tagged?) She uses acrylic paints on canvas, and the best way to describe her technique is 'dabbing' (that's her term for it). The results are wonderful, although I am a teeny bit biased!
Here are some of her recent paintings:
I entered this drawing (which is a bigger elaboration of this drawing) into the Annual LOOK '07 Show organized by the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria and I just found out that it received an Honourable Mention! Pretty cool. Last year I entered this piece and won Third Prize. The opening reception is tonight. The show is in the Bay Centre downtown, on the bottom floor (off Douglas street, down the escalator, turn right).
This is kind of a milestone for me. You see it was at last year's LOOK show that I exhibited one of my drawings in public for the first time in a long long time (even though I've been drawing constantly since forever). When I won third prize, it was a surprise, but also a nice little confidence-booster that I was on the right track. So here I am, one year later. So much has happened during these past 12 months (lots of good things!). And I'm more clear than I've ever been about where I'm going. Man, that's a great feeling.
Last night I installed my little group of drawings in the MAKE show. Here's how they look:
I always get a strange feeling when I put my works on display. They look so different than when they're on the kitchen table, or on my blog. Like, REALLY different (to me, anyway).
I picked up my copies of the book too. It looks really good. And it's hardcover!
... And here's the spread with my drawings...
And here's a few snaps of some of the other artists' work:
The book will be available online in a week or so. If you're in the Victoria area, check out the show!
I've got so many drawings and ideas and silliness that I want to share with you, but I've been sooooooooo busy lately, busy at work, busy designing greeting cards for a company in Toronto, too busy to even scan something. Hopefully things will let up soon. In the meantime, I wanted to tell about a book and a show I'll be in that's coming up.
The show and full-color book is called the MAKE, and it's week long art show and installation being held at a temporary venue at Hillside and Government (1-625 Hillside) here in Victoria. There will be a grand opening night on January 20th (with a very special musical guest) and a week full of alternate events. The space will be open for all the events in the evenings and open daily 11am-6pm for the duration of the show. You can find out more about the show at www.themake.ca. For such a small city, there always seems to be some pretty ambitious, worthwhile art happenings around here. I haven't even seen the book yet. If you're in the Victoria area during that week, go see some cool local art!
