These five drawings got all dressed up and have been shipped off to be in the Fresh stART benefit exhibition and sale, Feb 7th at Arena 1 Gallery at the Santa Monica Art Studios. The proceeds are split between the artist and Para Los Ninos. Lots of great artists that I admire are participating, inlcuding Evah Fan, Saelee Oh, Mark Todd, Jill Bliss, and Megan Whitmarsh.
I hate framing, and it's hard to let my work go sometimes, especially one like Beard Bird that was blogged about a gazillion times!
So if you want to get your hands on any of these originals (and you're in the Santa Monica area), head over to the Fresh stART website and get your tickets.
I'm doing a whole series that are 6 x 6 inches, ink & watercolour on paper, mounted on wood, for our upcoming show. Here's one of them (more to come):
I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to my wife, Kristen. Kristen, this is everybody.
Kristen and I are having an art show together in March, which we are madly preparing for, at Studio 16 1/2 in Fan Tan Alley, here in Victoria BC. Here's the invite I designed:
The opening reception is Saturday March 10th, from 1 to 4. Stop by and say hello!
So there's something you didn't know about me - my wife is an artist too. (so does that count as one of five things you didn't know about me, for which I've been tagged?) She uses acrylic paints on canvas, and the best way to describe her technique is 'dabbing' (that's her term for it). The results are wonderful, although I am a teeny bit biased!
Here are some of her recent paintings:
I entered this drawing (which is a bigger elaboration of this drawing) into the Annual LOOK '07 Show organized by the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria and I just found out that it received an Honourable Mention! Pretty cool. Last year I entered this piece and won Third Prize. The opening reception is tonight. The show is in the Bay Centre downtown, on the bottom floor (off Douglas street, down the escalator, turn right).
This is kind of a milestone for me. You see it was at last year's LOOK show that I exhibited one of my drawings in public for the first time in a long long time (even though I've been drawing constantly since forever). When I won third prize, it was a surprise, but also a nice little confidence-booster that I was on the right track. So here I am, one year later. So much has happened during these past 12 months (lots of good things!). And I'm more clear than I've ever been about where I'm going. Man, that's a great feeling.
Last night I installed my little group of drawings in the MAKE show. Here's how they look:
I always get a strange feeling when I put my works on display. They look so different than when they're on the kitchen table, or on my blog. Like, REALLY different (to me, anyway).
I picked up my copies of the book too. It looks really good. And it's hardcover!
... And here's the spread with my drawings...
And here's a few snaps of some of the other artists' work:
The book will be available online in a week or so. If you're in the Victoria area, check out the show!
I have sent a batch of postcard drawings (which I've been slaving over for the past couple of weeks) to the Outpost for Contemporary Art in Los Angeles for their Post-Postcard 2006 show, which is happening this weekend, Dec 8-10.
Friday Dec. 8: 7-9 pm, members only preview
Saturday Dec. 9: 7-10 pm
Sunday Dec. 10: 12-5 pm
I'm so excited about this show! So if you're in the LA area, stop by (6375 N. Figueroa St.) and check it out. All of the art is postcard-size, and costs between $1 to $30. My postcards are hand-painted prints, which in this case means the black lines are printed, but the coloured bits are done by hand in watercolour. They actually look (and feel) like original drawings. Why make hand-painted prints, you may ask? Well, it was my way of creating multiples of my drawings (and keeping the price low), but still keeping a hand-made aspect to it.
There are some new drawings in this batch that I'll be posting in a day or two.
